Love of Country vs. Love of Government

Mahirap Ipagtanggol ang Pamahalaan Kapag Kulang ang Sagot sa mga Alegasyon ng Katiwalian

*Dr. Rodolfo John Ortiz Teope, PhD, EdD, DM

Imagine an official telling a frustrated citizen, “Kung mahal mo ang bayan, dapat suportahan mo ang gobyerno!”

We laugh because loving a home means protecting the people inside it. Yet in politics, asking what happened to public money can become a test of loyalty.

“Bakit puro puna?”

“Suportahan mo na lang.”

But the person asking belongs to the country, too.

Imagine a mother searching a flooded room for her daughter’s school shoes. One floats beside the door. The other is beneath the muddy water.

“Ma, huwag na. Puwede naman po akong magtsinelas.”

Her mother keeps searching.

She finds the missing shoe beneath a chair.

“Ma, bakit po kayo umiiyak? Nahanap naman natin.”

She turns away and says something has entered her eye.

In this imagined home, the shoes can be washed. What the mother cannot answer is how they will afford another beginning.

We should remember her when discussing the Marcos administration’s response to questions about flood control spending.

Complaints involving public works personnel and contractors require investigation. They do not automatically establish the President’s personal involvement. Citizens can nevertheless judge how his administration supervises spending, addresses warnings, and pursues those responsible.

For that mother, progress will eventually mean sleeping through the rain without lifting her child onto a table.

Flooding alone does not prove corruption. Rainfall, blocked waterways, poor planning, and maintenance failures can contribute. But the rain should never become an excuse to close the records.

What was promised? What was built? Who inspected it? Why was payment approved?

Supporters and critics deserve answers.

“Sinusuportahan kita, kaya inaasahan kong sasagot ka.”

That is a citizen taking a promise seriously.

When people ask what happened to that promise, they are asking whether the government remembers the lives entrusted to its care.

Blind loyalty begins when allegiance becomes more important than reconsidering a judgment.

“Hindi niya alam.”

“Basta nagtitiwala ako.”

An explanation deserves examination. Trust becomes blind when it is accepted automatically while contrary evidence is refused a hearing.

Fanaticism takes devotion further, turning it into hostility toward those who question. Critics become enemies. Complainants are mocked. Another family’s suffering becomes material for a political argument.

A mother’s right to ask does not depend on her vote.

Silence, however, can also come from fear. May empleyadong nag-aalala sa trabaho. May residenteng umaasa sa tulong. Their vulnerability should never be confused with devotion.

Others may protect benefits or influence, but silence alone proves neither payment nor reward.

Sa barangay, personal ang bigat nito.

“Bakit ka nagtatanong? Tinulungan ka na nga.”

A bag of rice matters when the pot is empty. Gratitude can last for years. But it cannot settle a question about public funds.

Assistance should restore security, not leave people feeling their voice belongs to an official.

Love of country must guide how we judge government. I want sound programs to succeed, honest workers treated fairly, and proven wrongdoing punished.

Back in the girl’s home, the water has gone down. Her mother has washed the uniform. One shoe has begun to come apart.

“Puwede pa po ito, Ma. Huwag muna kayong bumili.”

Her mother nods.

The child is already learning to ask for less.

Her mother finds some glue and holds the sole in place. The girl rests against her shoulder.

Neither speaks.

They deserve a government that cares for what they struggle to keep.

This family deserves answers without proving political loyalty.

They have already paid through their taxes, their lost belongings, and the work of beginning again.

They should not be asked to pay again with their silence.
