One afternoon, after helping several people who came to me asking for assistance, I found myself sitting quietly and asking a question I had never really wanted to answer. Why is it that some of the people we help the most eventually become the very people who hurt, disappoint, or even resent us? It was never about the money I had given, the time I had spent, or the opportunities I had shared. What weighed heavily on my heart was the realization that kindness, no matter how sincere, can sometimes be mistaken as an obligation rather than a gift. At that moment, I realized that perhaps one of the greatest tests of integrity is not learning how to help people—but learning how to continue helping even after experiencing disappointment.
That reality hurts.
You only wanted to ease someone’s burden, help them survive, or simply become a blessing in their difficult season. Yet sometimes, instead of gratitude, what comes back is disappointment, entitlement, or even resentment.
Human nature tells us that people have different attitudes, different values, and different moral standards.
But despite everything I have seen, I still refuse to believe that helping people is a mistake.
Hindi katangahan ang tumulong sa kapwa.
Hindi kahinaan ang maging mabuti.
The real weakness is allowing the cruelty of others to change the goodness within us.
Oo, bahagi ng buhay ang minsang maloko. Bahagi ng buhay ang minsang malamangan. Bahagi ng buhay ang mapagtiwala nang sobra. But it should never become part of our character to cheat others simply because we were cheated before.
For me, that is the true price of integrity.
Integrity is choosing to remain honest even when dishonesty seems profitable. It is choosing compassion even when the world rewards selfishness.
We hear stories of kind employers murdered by the very employees they helped. There are benefactors betrayed by those they once rescued.
In philosophy, they say there can be no concept of good without evil. Perhaps that is true. But sometimes it feels as though evil is becoming more common than goodness.
We witness corruption that remains unpunished.
It is frustrating.
Peace of mind is worth far more than the temporary satisfaction of revenge.
I believe that justice does not always come from human hands. Whether we call it Divine Justice, the Law of the Universe, or simply the consequences of one’s actions, every person will eventually harvest what he or she has planted.
Those memories are worth keeping. Bitterness is not.
Even in times of financial difficulty, mayroon din akong simpleng prinsipyo. Before I borrow money from a friend, I would rather pawn something I own or sell something I can live without.
But behind those appearances are unpaid obligations and endless debt. It becomes an endless cycle that slowly steals financial freedom and inner peace.
Perhaps if our country offered more equal opportunities, fewer people would feel the need to exploit others.
But while waiting for that better society, each of us still has a choice.
We can choose to become part of the problem.
Or we can choose to become part of the solution.
Not because I expect appreciation, but because I refuse to let the cruelty of others change the goodness that God planted in my heart.
There will always be people who will abuse kindness, take advantage of generosity, and mistake compassion for weakness. But I refuse to let them change who I am. If I must choose between being the one who was deceived and the one who deceived others, I will always choose the first. If I must choose between losing money and losing my integrity, I will always protect my integrity. Wealth can be earned again. Trust can be rebuilt. But once character is surrendered, it becomes the most difficult thing to recover.
Perhaps that is why I continue to believe, despite all the disappointments I have experienced, that it is still far better to be the one who was fooled than to become the one who fools others.
Because in the end, kindness may sometimes be abused, but integrity is never wasted.
